The IEEE Computer Society has created the Technical Consortium on High Performance Computing (TCHPC) to advance and coordinate work in the field of high performance computing networking, storage, and analysis concepts, technologies and applications, and to expand the IEEE’s role in this interdisciplinary and pervasive field. The Consortium has launched an Education and Outreach Initiative to coordinate activities, information, and best practices around HPC education/outreach across its member technical committees and the broader community. This includes the coordination of student activities across conferences, and specifically for the IPDPS 2022 PhD Forum.

PHD FORUM PROGRAM

The annual IPDPS PhD Forum event will be held virtually in 2022 with the traditional poster presentations by students working toward a PhD in broadly defined areas related to parallel and distributed processing. Every effort will be made to provide networking opportunities, including mentoring a session and breakout rooms for discussion. See the 19 research projects-dissertations accepted for the PhD Forum 2022 program. Download PDF

It is sponsored by the Technical Committee on Parallel Processing, a member of the TCHPC, and the program will include a career mentoring event for participating students, as well as student authors of conference papers.

The conference will publish abstracts for the posters accepted for presentation at the PhD Forum. These will be included as part of the conference workshops proceedings (IPDPSW 2022). The abstracts will be formatted as part of a compendium that includes contact information for the poster authors and advisors.

The PhD Forum Program will be held virtually on Monday, May 30, 2022 with a start time of 11:00 AM EDT. PhD Forum presenters will receive instructions for participation.

POSTER GUIDELINES

IPDPS 2022 PhD Forum organizers have sent instructions for the preparation and upload of electronic posters due on May 15th

Some basic guidelines on how to organize the poster include:

  • Unlike in-person poster sessions, your poster will be the electronic online version and will be visited individually by conference attendees, so brevity will be helpful in holding the attention of the viewer.
  • Posters should be no larger than an A0 paper size (841 x 1189 mm or 33.1 x 46.8 in). If it is horizontally structured, please still fit within the portrait dimensions specified (33.1 x 46.8 in max).
  • Be sure the title and organizational affiliations are clear along the top.
  • Consider the normal left-to-right, top-to-bottom reading order for English when organizing the contents. Multiple columns are perfectly acceptable
  • If there are existing publications by the poster authors on the topic, these should be the only references.
  • Balance the amount of graphics and text. A visitor should be able to get the high level view within 1 minute to decide whether to review further and contact you about the research described.
  • Graphics should show structure and general measurements that illustrate the results.
  • Text should explain things without large paragraphs explaining.
  • Text should be large enough to easily read on a tablet screen.
  • Assume the viewer is somewhat to generally knowledgeable about the topic eliminating the need for long motivational passages.
  • Provide sufficient motivational material to show at a glance the poster authors understand potential impact.
  • Compensation for color blindness is important. Design for monochrome, but add color to highlight.

Student “Travel” Awards

The IEEE Computer Society Technical Committee on Parallel Processing (TCPP) acts as an international forum to promote parallel processing research and education and participates in setting up technical standards in this area. Issues related to the design, analysis and implementation of parallel systems and solutions are of interest. For IPDPS, when holding in-person conferences, TCPP has supported travel expense for students. This year for IPDPS 2022 being held virtually, in lieu of travel expense, TCPP will underwrite the registration fees for students accepted for PhD Forum participation. The notification of acceptance will include instructions for complimentary registration.
