ÜMIT V. ÇATALYÜREK ELECTED CHAIR ELECT OF IPDPS STEERING COMMITTEE
At IPDPS 2023, the IPDPS Steering Committee voted to pursue a plan to formalize Steering Committee policies of membership and organization. This has included ongoing recruitment of new members as described here.
Building on 37 years of experience for the conference, which has become a leading event in the fields of parallel and distributed computing, the SC has adopted revised guidelines which include: term limits; establishment of an Advisory Board to the SC (ABSC) composed of past SC members; and the election of a Chair Elect who will serve 3 years in that role.
In an election conducted by conference staff from the IEEE Computer Society in August, the IPDPS Steering Committee listed here chose Ümit Çatalyürek to serve as Chair Elect of the Steering Committee for 3 years, starting in 2023.
Brief Bio
Ümit V. Çatalyürek concurrently holds appointments as a Professor of Computational Science and Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology and as an Amazon Scholar at the Amazon Web Services. He received his Ph.D., M.S. and B.S. in Computer Engineering and Information Science from Bilkent University. Çatalyürek is a Fellow of IEEE and SIAM. He was the elected Chair for IEEE TCPP for 2016-2019, and the Vice-Chair for ACM SIGBio for 2015-2021. He also serves as a member of Board of Trustees of Bilkent University. Çatalyürek currently serves as the Editor-in-Chief for Parallel Computing and has served on the editorial boards of IEEE TPDS, SIAM SISC, and JPDC. He is a recipient of an NSF CAREER award and is the PI of several awards from the DOE, the NIH and the NSF. He has co-authored more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, invited book chapters, and papers. His main research areas are in parallel computing, combinatorial scientific computing, and biomedical informatics.
